Winter Weather Warning
Winter is here and dangerously low temperatures are expected in the coming days. To help prepare you (and your home), we compiled a list of precautions to help prevent pipe freezes and the potential for flooding. As always, stay safe – and stay warm!
- Familiarize yourself with where the main shutoff is located – just in case
- Open all water faucets to allow a very thin trickle of water to flow through the water lines (both hot and cold)
- Leave cabinet doors underneath sinks open so the water pipes remain ventilated with warm air
- Leave bathroom doors open
- Keep the fireplace flue closed when you’re not using it
- Leave the heat on and thermostat set no less than 65 degrees (especially if you are gone for more than 24 hours)
- If you plan to be out of town or away from your home for more than 48 hours
- Leave all drains open
- Do not leave anything in the sinks (i.e. kitchen utensils, dishes, dish rags, etc.) as they may cause drains to become clogged and possibly cause glowing
- If you turn on a faucet and no water comes out, this may indicate popes have already frozen
- Be sure to turn the faucet back off and shut off the main water line
